Events in the year 1848

From January to August Mexican partisans harassed the U.S. Army of Occupation. Formal fighting, however, had ceased by the end of January.

  • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848 in which Mexico surrendered a vast tract of land to the United States for the sum of USD $15 million.
  • 10 March 1848: U.S. Senate ratifies Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, with amendments.
  • March 1848: Santa Anna departs Mexico for exile in Jamaica.
  • March 16 – Battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales
  • 25 May 1848: Mexican Congress ratifies Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
  • 4 July 1848: President Polk formally announces ratification of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
  • 2 August 1848: Last U.S troops leave Mexico
