Revolutionary War British Military Units

A typical British Army Regiment at the start of the Revolution was composed of 10 Companies:

Of the 10 companies, there was 2 companies of elite soldiers in the regiment. A Light-Infantry company and a Grenadier Company.

  1. A Light-Infantry company that was used for reconnaissance, skirmishing, and protecting the flanks of the army while on the march. The members were chosen for physical ability, alertness, and vigor.
  2. A Grenadier company ( the shock troops) containing the tallest and strongest men of the regiment.
  3. On many occassions, these 2 companies from several regiments were grouped together into Battalions for special purposes such as leading assault columns on key objectives, flank marches, river crossings, or the defense of critical areas.

Total strength of a normal regiment was supposed to be about 450 soldiers, but they were often short of personnel and usually averaged about 400 men during the war.
